Been on the lookout for good songs I could potentially make TOZ AMVs of, even maybe the anime which as a fanvid editor I view as a necessary evil, Zayde Wolf and RAIGN seem to have good songs for the mood I'm going for

Hidden Citizens would also be a good fit

TV watching

I'm watching Elite on netflix mostly just for something to do, and it's a murder mystery show, so I at least gotta find out whodunit. But it's weird because while, yeah, sleazy shows like this aren't really my thing, it often comes so close to being something dark that could be my thing and yet I still don't care as deeply as I think the show wants.

The biggest problem is that I cannot believe high school students have the energy to be this duplicitous and catty all the time. If the characters were 19, 20 maybe I could buy it, but not 16! Do these children not have schoolwork to do?!

Tied into the fact that the entire plot hinges on characters' blackmailing and using each other so you can be lead to assume anyone is the murderer, characters don't really change or have much nuance of emotion. There's bits and pieces through the show that are exempt from this, but they're so brief it is easy to forget they happened. Where characters were introduced is more or less how they've stayed throughout six episodes of eight in the whole season. It's not the worst character writing I've ever seen, but it still leaves me bored most scenes.

The show's biggest strengths are a nifty framing device and cinematography. Actual plot and writing are just good enough to keep me around for a binge-watch, and then I'll likely forget about it in a year.

Musings on lack of muses

In the grand scheme of how long it's been going on, I've been in the fandom for D. Gray Man for a miniscule amount of time, but the trio of Allen, Lenalee, and Lavi has stolen my heart so quickly and I desperately need to write something cute with all of them. Even if it's something small based off, I don't know, "Running in the Night" in all its pseudo 80s goodness, I don't care.

Fanmix - The Four of Us Travelled the Stars

An older mix I made for the Lunanoff family from William Joyce's The Guardians of Childhood series. AKA: I am having a lot of feelings and don’t know what else to do with them, so let’s make a mix for family sweetness, impending doom, and sacrifices.

1. your bones - OF MONSTERS AND MEN

in the spring we made a boat

out of feathers, out of bones

we set fire to our homes

walking barefoot in the snow

distant rhythm of the drums

as we drifted towards the storm

2. end of the world - DAN ROMER & BENH ZEITLIN

[instrumental]

3. run boy run - WOODKID

tomorrow is another day

and you won’t have to hide away

you’ll be a man, boy

but for now it’s time to run, it’s time to run

4. one family - PHIL COLLINS & MARK MENCIA

[instrumental]

5. go to rakuen - YOKO KANNO

[instrumental]

6. this place is a shelter - ÓLAFUR ARNALDS

[instrumental]

7. sleepsong - SECRET GARDEN

may you bring love and may you bring happiness

be loved in return to the end of your days

now fall off to sleep, I’m not meaning to keep you

I’ll just sit for awhile and sing loo-li-lai-lay

8. star canopy - ALAN SILVESTRI

[instrumental]

9. winter - CAROLINE

if we hold onto each other, life would be so sweet

if we hold onto each other, life would be complete

all this time, winter was coming

10. the emigration tunes - LOREENA MCKENNITT

[instrumental]

11. river lullaby - HANS ZIMMER & AMY GRANT

sleep and remember this river lullaby

and I’ll be with you when you dream

12. battle - standing up - TAKEHARU ISHIMOTO

[instrumental]

13. protecting his charge - GARRY SCHYMAN

[instrumental]

14. sad resolution~separation - MICHIRU OSHIMA

[instrumental]

15. a place in heaven [feat. jenifer thigpen] - THOMAS BERGERSEN

[instrumental]

16. home - DANIEL JANG

[instrumental]

Trust [AUGH! Why won't this code correctly?!?]

A fic written for talesofzine, a free project curated through tumblr. After struggling to finish anything for years, I finally made something focusing on my favourite character from Tales of Symphonia, Genis Sage.

Genis never set out to make friends. The world gives him some anyway. )

Projects to do:

Priority:
- Genis fic for the zine I signed up for
- more Gargantia appreciation posts for tumblr just so searches hopefully turn up more than porn
- small Sorey fanvid
- TOZ gen fanvid that's been sitting on my computer for over a year
- small Gargantia fanvid
- Mikleo+Alisha friendship fic

Should try to do within the year, but not priority:
- Fic that was supposed to be a part of a reibert week like 2 years ago, I'm so bad at procrastinating!
- Reiner-centric fic that I just want to get off my chest, I don't care if it fits to the downhill canon anymore
- Fic inspired by TOZ's water shrine
- Fic where Colette and Presea talk, because their friendship is seriously underappreciated
- appreciation posts for female characters in general
- Make an actual draft of the Sleeping Beauty story, gdi!
- yumikuri fic that actually covers the complexities of the characters, i love fluff but want something meatier out there
- drafts of original short stories [Harlem Rennaissance band, "Blood of the Covenant"]

What I've Been Reading: Tales of Xillia Fanfiction

updated August 12 2018, now with more sequel based stories!

While this can be used by others like a rec list, I'm doing this for more a personal catalogue type of deal, of anything I read to completion (or a significant portion of in the case of WIPs).

Since an update of Wondershare converter rendered it unusable on my old operating system, (which sucks, because i payed for it) i've started using handbrake but every file doesn't import into FCP7. As far as I can tell the solutions to this problem are:

match the clips frame rate to sequence settings frame rate

set handbrake to 29.97 (NTSC Video) h.264 constant framerate/constant quality

use quicktime to make a copy of the file

This is at least what other people said worked for them.

And despite all previous entries saying otherwise, turns out the first series I actually start and finish recently is Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. Maybe I'm grading it on a curve, since the only other things I've watched are a crappy yaoi anime I watched for basically laughs because I realized Id never watched one despite knowing the infamous cliches of the sub-genre, and then Captain Earth, which I've already explained in part why it's frustrating. Gargantia was fun and charming and reminded me of the stuff I liked or was interested in checking out when I was younger. It has its cons, no doubt, but i actually enjoyed watching each episode of basically seeing our teen lead adjust to a different, peaceful way of life, the animation obviously had a big budget behind it so was gorgeous but also just did moody colours well so it didn't feel too much style or substance, and i was honestly shocked with how much I liked the main characters. My fave was of course the giant robot, but it says something to the charm of what went into the series that I found an AI a genuinely likeable character.

I know the story doesn't do much new for its sci-fi musings, in fact its pretty easy to see where the major plot points are going, but it was still presented in a way that I could probably recommend it to people - while also warning them "Hey, there's a painfully unfunny bit in an otherwise fluffy episode where drag queens are turned into the butt of jokes" of course, because that's still the biggest downer to the whole thing - and may even save up for DVDs or something if I still like the show after letting it sit.

For now I'm gonna take a break from anime and watch a bunch of superhero cartoons I never saw as a kid, camping out on Netflix will be how I spend my brief unemployment.

More Shows

Despite what I said last time about what shows I was likely going to continue or finish, I started watching Captain Earth and will continue streaming it until I finish. It's a show I have a lot of mixed feelings about. The first episode I enjoyed a lot, I thought it did a really good job of introducing me to the world while keeping a mystery to intrigue, and following episodes haven't quite lived up to that feeling.

It's a fun show and has likeable characters, but I often feel lost amongst the technobabble and show-specific terms, and oh my god the fanservice is so bad! I know that's the environment anime is in these days, but not only it often out of place its also kind of gross because the show continuously reminds its audience its doing panty shots and other such drek towards characters who are minors. Moco I at least appreciate that they didn't even hide what she's for, but poor Hana is just not a character because they want to use her inexperience with the world to appeal to perverts. (so there's infantilization on top of ephebophilia, "disgust" is too kind a word for this type of writing)

I only just finished 14 episodes and just now it gave her some focus and some semblance of identity. It came with suddenly confessing love to our hero, which I so don't believe, but it was at least something this far into the show! I hope this is steering her in a better direction, but only time will tell if I'll like it or not.

Also, while I am fully aware of its flaws, I'm surprised there seems to be virtually no fan activity for this show, I expect Crunchyroll shows like this to be more popular.

(Also, this may not happen, but since its been a year of me finally catching up with Attack on Titan and becoming part of the fandom, I'm thinking of rewatching the show. Might help me get some inspiration again for working on fanfic ideas I've been holding on to for too long)

Series Started

Blue Drop: watched two episodes so far, enjoying it and considering its one of those 12ep series, will likely be the first I finish. I enjoy the characters so far and am intrigued by the mystery. Gonzo production, so it looks very nice but has some badly integrated CG. Prefer the dub simply because everyone sounds a bit less quiet than in the original Japanese, but I don't think it makes much difference for viewing experience.

El Cazador de le Bruja: Have only watched the first episode, first to see if it caught my interest and then again for a few minutes to see if the dub was good. Dub cast seems to fit well from what I saw - it was fun hearing Maxey Whitehead to a girl's voice since I've only heard her do boys like Czes before - but I might stick with subtitles for first viewing and save the dub for if I buy DVDs. Seems like the sort of fun adventure series I could enjoy a lot, will definitely come back to.

Bodacious Space Pirates: From the title I was surprised I actually enjoyed this so much. It seems like high energy fun, will return to but isn't priority right now.

Yona of the Dawn: Like the music and character designs, but not sure from the first episode if I'll enjoy the series. I wanna see Yona become a badass like the opening promises, but the ending twist seems so out of nowhere, and I don't think I'll enjoy Hak as a possible love interest. Was enjoyable enough for me to watch another episode when I have time. Soundtrack is my type of music style, so there's definitely that.

Also nearly finished Sinister on Netflix, but it is a highly disturbing movie and couldn't handle any more of it since I live alone and already have to deal with GAD issues without factoring in horror movie factors.

It's a good thing I already got spoiled/figured stuff out for myself in regards to attack on titan, because people saying the identity of the colossus titan shifter in ebay would have seriously pissed me off otherwise

i mean it still irritates me in a "wow, way to be a dick" way but i'm not personally affected by it

I shouldn't expect smart from YT comments, yet-

"great except suburu"

then... why did you watch an AMV the creator had clearly labeled as focusing on Subaru and Tsukasa?

I had a dream last night that, among other things, involved what was supposedly a live-action Evangelion. It also had a different setup than the original series or Rebuild, but for some reason it related to Mockingjay? I don't even get that, since i never read past Catching Fire but anyway -

I'm kind of mad this isn't a real thing, because the guy my subconscious mind pictured as Kaworu was the most adorable actor ever! Like, he had these really good subtle expressions that fit the character so well and I want this to actually exist so I can bask in the cute talent

Note to self:

I've noticed while looking through notes that I have a very bad habit of setting every conversation of a story between two characters and only two. There are only so many times I can have two people go off to drink tea or whatever other activity I'm using to set the scene while they chat before readers get bored.

I really hate those moments when I have a plan for a fanvid and I think "Yeah, this'll be easy and quick to do!"

(5 minutes later, after working on the same few second clip over and over)

"Why is this not looking like how I want it?"

(And this is why I rarely finish my projects.)

I can never be succinct in my writing. Like, I have this prompt someone wrote in a meme and I thought "Hey, this involves a character I actually like but a lot of people act like he doesn't exist" and I thought it would only be a few parts and mostly simple. Then my imagination is like "THROW EVERYTHING AT THE WALL" and now I have what could be considered a character arc that has some slight rising action and I have to come up with the falling action and satisfying conclusion to this too if I want to feel proud enough to post the finished product and blaaaaaargh! It was supposed to be short, brain, what are you doing to me?!
